Dilatation and Curettage

Dilatation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure used to diagnose and treat many conditions that cause abnormal bleeding from the uterus. It also can be used to help detect cancer of the uterus.

Dilatation stretches the opening of the cervix to make it wider; curettage involves removing a sample of the cells lining the uterus. This sample can then be viewed under a microscope to look for any abnormal cells. A D&C also may be necessary during or after a miscarriage. The procedure can be performed in physician’s office, outpatient clinic, or hospital.
