Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy, or removal of the uterus, is a way to treat problems affecting the uterus. Because it is major surgery, your doctor may recommend trying other treatments before hysterectomy, but for some conditions, a hysterectomy may be the best choice.

A hysterectomy may be indicated for fibroids or other non-cancerous growths, excessive menstrual bleeding, endometriosis, or pelvic support problems that occur when the uterus drops down into the vagina.

The days when every woman had the same kind of hysterectomy are long gone. Today there are several types of hysterectomy, including minimally invasive procedures that shorten the hospital stay and reduce pain and recovery time.
