Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure

Cells on the cervix grow and shed constantly, but if these cells become abnormal, this may be an early warning sign of cancer. When tests show abnormal cells, your doctor may recommend the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP). LEEP is used to remove the abnormal cervical cells, allowing healthy cells to grow.

Regular Pap tests and pelvic exams are recommended to detect changes in the cervix. Lifestyle changes also can help protect cervical health. These include stopping smoking, limiting the number of sexual partners, and using condoms to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.
