Help Premier Women’s fight back against breast cancer by joining the 3D Revolution! Our practice prides itself on our personalized patient care and giving women the treatments they need to stay healthy. That is why we have acquired the most-advanced 3D technology available to give you better results and total peace of mind.
Our radiologists utilize Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (3D mammography) to screen and diagnose early breast cancer in all of our patients. This process allows our physicians to “look through tissue,” pinpoint suspicious findings and tumor masses, and make early detection of this affliction possible to help to save countless lives. This procedure is not only preventative and life-saving, it also helps to lover the amount of false positives for our patients who are waiting anxiously for their results.
A Trusted Resource for Women
We are associated with Heritage Valley Health System and part of the Allegheny Health Network, we know how important it is to stay connected with other medical practices as a resource and share our knowledge of the best ways to fight breast cancer. That is why we have adopted 3D mammography and made it a part of our day-to-day efforts.
Because of the digital nature of this 3D imaging, doctors and other specialists can consult with us and each other from thousands of miles away, as long as they have access to digital technology. Specialized physicians can see 3D mammograms without having to spend extra time – which can be crucial – waiting for x-rays to be delivered.
3D Mammography FAQs
- Is 3D mammography available to all patients?
Yes. This technology has become our new standard of care and is available to all patients for screening and diagnostic mammograms.
- What can patients expect during a 3D mammogram?
3D mammography complements standard 2D mammography. No additional breast compression is required and it only takes a few more seconds. The experience will be similar to mammograms that patients have had in the past. As is typical with any mammogram exam, some women experience minor discomfort and others experience no discomfort at all.
- With 3D mammography, do women still need an annual screening mammogram?
Yes. All women are at risk for breast cancer, regardless of symptoms or family history. Mammograms often can detect potential problems before they can be felt. Early detection greatly increases treatment options and the likelihood of successful recovery.
- Why do women still need an annual mammogram when 3D has an improved cancer detection rate?
Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women, affecting one in every eight women in the U.S. The goal of screening exams is to identify breast abnormalities as early as possible.
- Is 3D mammography safe for pregnant women?
As with traditional mammography, it is important that patients inform their technologist before an exam about being pregnant or the possibility of pregnancy.
- Is 3D mammography safe for women with breast implants?
Yes. Mammography, both 2D and 3D, is safe for women with breast implants.
- Is there increased radiation with 3D mammography?
3D mammography is safe. Radiation exposure to the breast is very low. The radiation dose for a combined 2D/3D mammography exam is well below the acceptable limits defined by the FDA and is only a fraction of the level of radiation everyone receives annually from the natural background of being outdoors.
